About Ron

Ron Aston is a Los Angeles-based sound effects editor and sound designer whose path into post-production began not in an edit bay, but behind a drum kit.

Originally from Hartford, Connecticut, Ron grew up playing drums in bands and venues throughout New England before relocating to Los Angeles early in his career to pursue music professionally. He began touring almost immediately, playing with artists and groups including Seals & Crofts, Hues Corporation, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Helen Reddy, Paul Anka, Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, Robben Ford, Minnie Riperton, and Tom Scott, among others. He was also the resident drummer for most of the run of the 1980s TV show Solid Gold, performing both in the studio and on camera.

After several years touring the globe, Ron shifted his focus to the recording studio, working as a studio musician on records, motion picture and television scores, and commercials for TV and radio. He was among the first Los Angeles studio drummers to embrace the era's changing technology, moving from drum machine programming into computer-based drum and percussion programming as the tools evolved.

With a longstanding interest in both the technical and creative sides of the music and entertainment business, Ron eventually turned to sound effects editing and design, spending a year at Video Symphony in Burbank, CA studying the craft of sound editing and post-production. Since the early 2000s, he has worked across sound effects editing, sound design, backgrounds, Foley, and dialogue editing on numerous motion picture and television productions. His years as a creative studio musician translate directly to the editing studio — for Ron, sound editing and sound design come down to the same two things that always mattered behind the kit: creativity and attention to detail.

Ron has been an active member of the Pro Tools beta test team since 2005, and is a member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild and ASCAP.
